I believed that surviving was the goal to reach; that living a safe, “normal” life after years of abuse was the best I could hope for…until I was shaken awake by grace. It reaches into the darkest places and pulls us up into the light. And it’s here that we’re able to see that surviving is only the beginning. That nothing is wasted. That brokenness becomes the calling.
I could never have imagined God would do such incredible things with the ashes of my past. Today, along with raising a family here in Minnesota, my spiritual family is continuously growing in the nation of Haiti. I am a part-time missionary there, with a full-time mission in life to help Haitian children and their families heal from trauma and flourish in the midst of a wide range of difficulties, from poverty to disability and beyond. It is only by God’s grace that I am able to do all that He’s calling me to. His grace and love is a source of constant strength and joy, as I work to serve those who’ve been touched by the all-too-familiar pain of abuse.
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.” Genesis 50:20
